The introduction to Stanley, on foot, from the public jetty. A guided history tour taking in Christ Church Cathedral, the Whalebone Arch, Victory Green, Jubilee Villas, Government House and the Liberation Monument.

2 hours 25 min2.9 kmEasy£40 pp

The introduction to the city. Why the roofs are painted the colours they are, how a place of under 3,000 people came to hold city status and a stone cathedral, what the whalebone arch is actually made of, and who lives behind those front doors on Ross Road. A short detour brings you to Cartmell Cottage, where three kitchens spanning over a century sit side by side under one roof.

What you will see on this Stanley walking tour

Christ Church Cathedral is the southernmost Anglican cathedral in the world, consecrated in 1892, and it is the building most visitors photograph first. The Whalebone Arch standing in front of it was put up in 1933 for the centenary of British administration in the Islands, and it is built from the jaws of two blue whales. Standing underneath it, you get the story of how whaling shaped this harbour and why the arch is still here.

From there the walk follows Ross Road along the water to Victory Green and the mizzen mast, then to Jubilee Villas, a terrace of British town houses built in 1887 for Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee and unlike anything else in the city. We carry on to the gates of Government House and finish at the Liberation Monument, raised by public subscription among Falkland Islanders and unveiled in 1984.

The detour most visitors never make

A short leg off the main route brings you to Cartmell Cottage, where three kitchens spanning more than a century sit side by side under one roof. It is the clearest picture you will get of how people here actually lived, and it is the part of the walk people tend to talk about afterwards.
